Governor Kay Ivey appointed Mary Martin Mitchell as commissioner of the Alabama Department of Revenue on May 1, 2026. A native of Selma, Alabama, she brings more than a decade of experience within the department, where she has played a central role in shaping tax policy and guiding complex legal matters.
Prior to her appointment, Commissioner Mitchell served as general counsel for the Department of Revenue, overseeing legal strategy, administrative law issues, and high-level tax policy implementation. Since joining the department in 2013, she has served as assistant counsel, acting director of tax policy and governmental affairs, department secretary, and both executive and general counsel, strengthening her institutional knowledge. Before entering state government, she served as a staff attorney for the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals and practiced law at a private firm in Huntsville.
Commissioner Mitchell attended the Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, before earning a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance, magna cum laude, from the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia. She holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Alabama School of Law, where she also received a Certificate in Public Interest Law.
Commissioner Mitchell is a member of Class XIV of the Alabama State Bar’s Leadership Forum. She is a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, where she serves on the vestry.
