FAQ Categories / Tax: Out of State Insurance

An Alabama liability insurance policy must cover every Alabama-registered motor vehicle. A registrant may contact their insurance company to convert the OOS policy to an Alabama policy. If they can convert to an Alabama policy, the registrant must contact their insurer to provide both the OOS policy in effect on the verification date and the current Alabama policy information to the ALDOR upload portal. Both policies must be confirmed to prevent suspension of the vehicle registration.

Military exemption: If you or your spouse is an Alabama resident currently serving in the U.S. military and stationed outside of Alabama, you may be exempt from Alabama’s MLI requirement. You must provide a copy of your military orders and proof of liability insurance from your current state of residence for ALDOR to review.
