MEMORANDUM 2020-001

TO: License Plate Issuing Officials
SUBJECT: New/Redesigned License Plates for Issuance Beginning April 1, 2020

The Louisiana State University plate has exceeded the minimum required number of pre-commitments and will be available for issuance beginning April 1, 2020. A shipment of plates will be ordered for each county based on the number of pre-commitments. Please note personalized and pre-numbered plates may be ordered on the Plate Reservation and Ordering System (PROS) and additional bulk orders for pre-numbered plates may be ordered using the Alabama Inventory Management System (AIMS) beginning April 1, 2020.

The Spring Hill College and Realtor plates have been redesigned and will be available for issuance beginning April 1, 2020. A shipment of plates will be ordered based on the number of current registrations in each county. Please note personalized and pre-numbered plates may be ordered on the Plate Reservation and Ordering System (PROS), and any additional bulk orders needed may be placed using the Alabama Inventory Management System (AIMS) beginning April 1, 2020. At that time, please remember to remove all license plates with the old design from your shelves and retain them for audit purposes.

The Amateur Radio plate has also been redesigned and will be available for issuance beginning April 1, 2020. As these plates are only issued to registrants who hold a valid amateur radio or citizen’s band radio license issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FFC) or the Civil Air Patrol, a shipment of plates will not be ordered and shipped to each county. Please note plates reflecting the registrant’s call letters assigned to the registrant by the FCC may be ordered on the Plate Reservation and Ordering System (PROS).

The tag numbering schemes for the license plates may be found on the Motor Vehicle Division website at https://revenue.alabama.gov/motor-vehicle/ under “Reference & Statistics” then “Registration File Information.”

If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact the Motor Vehicle Division at 334-242-9000.
