MEMORANDUM 2021-003 (Revised)

TO:                  License Plate Issuing Officials
SUBJECT:       Redesigned/Discontinued License Plates

The following license plates will be available for issuance beginning June 1, 2021:

  • National Wild Turkey Federation
  • Support the Arts
  • Professional Firefighter
  • I Share the Road

The following license plate will NOT be available for issuance beginning June 1, 2021:

  • Judson College

A supply of license plates based on the number of current registrations in each county has been ordered and should be arriving soon.  Personalized license plates may be ordered on demand through the Plate Reservation and Ordering System (PROS).  Additional license plate orders may be placed using the Alabama Inventory Management System (AIMS).  After June 1, 2021, please discontinue the issuance of license plates with the old design and retain for audit purposes.

The Motor Vehicle Division is transitioning all license plate categories to a new numbering scheme. Under the new numbering scheme, all license plates will have six (6) or seven (7) alphanumeric characters.  The alphanumeric characters will be consecutively assigned from a nearly infinite pool of possible license plate number and letter combinations.  The new license plate numbering scheme will eliminate the creation of individual numbering schemes for each license plate category and will virtually eliminate the duplication of license plate numbers.  Primary and secondary tag types are not affected by this change.

The new license plate numbering schemes may be found on the Motor Vehicle Division website at:  www.revenue.alabama.gov/motor-vehicle/ under “Reference & Statistics” and “Registration File Information.”

Please contact the Motor Vehicle Division at 334-242-9000 if you have any questions.
