MEMORANDUM 2022-005

TO:                 License Plate Issuing Officials
SUBJECT:    New and Redesigned License Plates

The following new license plates will be available for issuance beginning October 1, 2022:

  • Ambulance
  • Hearse
  • Vulcan Park and Museum
  • Oneonta Redskin Tag
  • University of Florida

The following redesigned license plate will be available for issuance beginning October 1, 2022:

  • National Guard (low number plates)

The stacked characters (NG) are being added back to the National Guard low number license plates. The redesigned license plate will reflect the stacked characters followed by the alphanumeric plate sequence. Beginning October 1, 2022, discontinue the issuance of the old license plate design and retain for audit purposes.

The Ambulance/Hearse license plate will now be two separate plates: Ambulance and Hearse. For each plate, a supply of prenumbered license plates was ordered based on the number of current Ambulance/Hearse registrations in each county and should arrive soon. Beginning October 1, 2022, discontinue the issuance of the old license plate design and retain for audit purposes.

For the new Vulcan Park and Museum, Oneonta Redskin Tag, and University of Florida license plates, a shipment of prenumbered license plates was ordered based on the pre-commitment report numbers for each county. Personalized license plates may be ordered on demand through the Plate Reservation and Ordering System (PROS). Additional license plate orders may be placed using the Alabama Inventory Management System (AIMS).

The tag numbering schemes for license plates may be found at revenue.alabama.gov/division/motor-vehicle/ under “License Plate and Registration Information” then “Fee Schedule” then “Registration File Information.”

For more information, contact the Motor Vehicle Division at 334 242-9000.
