TO: Licensing Plate Issuing Officials
SUBJECT: New and Retained Designs License Plates
DATE: December 12, 2023

The following new plates will be available for issuance beginning January 1, 2024:

  • Air Medal
  • Operation Inherent Resolve
  • U.S. Marine Corps
  • U.S. Space Force
  • Children’s of Alabama
  • Brain Cancer Research

For the Children’s of Alabama plate, a shipment of prenumbered license plates was ordered based on the precommitment report numbers for each county and should be arriving soon. For the Brain Cancer Research plate, the plate is not subject to Legislative Oversight Committee standards and therefore, has no precommitments. Instead, the plate will be available for bulk ordering beginning January 1, 2024. For both the Children’s of Alabama and the Brain Cancer Research plates, personalized license plates may be ordered on demand through the ALVIN system. For all the above plates, additional plate orders may be ordered on demand through the ALVIN system.

The following Military and Veteran License plate categories will have a reissuance effective date of January 1, 2024, and will retain their current designs. A new metal plate should be issued in conjunction with recertifying the registrant’s eligibility to continue to display the license plate:

  • Disabled Veteran Army
  • Disabled Veteran Coast Guard
  • Disabled Marine Corps
  • Disabled Veteran Merchant Marine
  • Disabled Veteran National Guard
  • Disabled Veteran Navy

  • Vietnam Veteran
  • Battle of the Bulge
  • WW II American
  • WW II Asiatic Pacific
  • WW II European
  • Operation Enduring Freedom
  • Operation Iraqi Freedom
  • Global War on Terrorism
  • Peal Harbor Survivor
  • Retired Military – U.S. Armed Force Air Force
  • Retired Military – U.S. Armed Forces Army
  • Retired Military – U.S. Armed Forces Coast Guard

A supply of license plates based on the number of current registrations in each country has been ordered and should be arriving soon. Personalized license plates (if applicable) and additional plate orders may be ordered on demand or in bulk through the ALVIN system.

The following permanent license plate categories will also have a reissuance effective date of January 1, 2024, and will require recertification of eligibility upon renewal; however, a new metal plate is not required to be issued:

  • Bronze Star
  • Silver Star
  • Purple Heart
  • Prisoner of War (POW)
  • Medal of Honor
  • Legion of Valor
  • Distinguished Flying Cross

The sponsoring organizations for the following license plates elected to retain their current designs. However, they will be replaced with plates that have the new numbering scheme and without decal pockets. The plates will be available for issuance beginning January 1, 2024:

  • Alabama Home Builders
  • K9 for Vets

A supply of license plates based on the number of current registrations in each country has been ordered and should be arriving soon. Personalized license plates and additional plate orders may be ordered on demand through the ALVIN system. Beginning January 1, 2024, discontinue the issuance of license plates with the old design and retain for audit purposes.

The tag numbering scheme for the license plates may be found at https://www.revenue.alabama.gov/division/motorvehicle/ under “License Plate and Registration Information” then “Fee Schedule” then “Registration File Information.”
