MEMORANDUM 2017-020
TO: License Plate Issuing Officials
SUBJECT: New/Redesigned Distinctive License Plates for Issuance Beginning January 1, 2018
Legislative Act 2017-400 established a new distinctive military license plate category for residents who are recipients of the Distinguished Flying Cross. The license plate will be available for issuance beginning January 1, 2018. Please note all license plate orders must be placed through the Plate Reservation and Ordering System (PROS) beginning January 1, 2018. Distribution information from the State Comptroller’s office will be provided soon.
The license plates listed below have been redesigned for issuance beginning January 1, 2018. Please remember to remove all license plates with the old design from your shelves and retain them for audit purposes beginning January 1, 2018.

An initial order of the following plates will be delivered to licensing officials’ offices, based
on the number of plates issued to residents of the county. Additional orders must be
placed through PROS beginning January 1, 2018.

• Desert Storm-Desert Shield
• Marine Corp (Active)
• Marine Corp (Retired/honorably discharged)
• Purple Heart
• US Air Force
• US Army
• US Navy

For the below list, all license plate orders must be placed through PROS beginning
January 1, 2018.

• Atomic Nuked
• Korean War Veteran
• US Coast Guard
• US Maritime Marine
• Retired Military Air Force
• Retired Military Army
• Retired Military Coast Guard
• Retired Military Merchant Marine
• Retired Military Navy
• Disabled Veteran Air Force
• Disabled Veteran Army
• Disabled Veteran Coast Guard
• Disabled Veteran Merchant Marine
• Disabled Veteran Navy

Please note there will be a new primary tag type code for the Retired Military and Disabled Veteran license plate to represent each branch of service. This change will eliminate the need for branch of service decals as it will now be pre-printed on the license plate.
The tag numbering schemes for the license plates may be found on the Motor Vehicle Division website at https://revenue.alabama.gov/motor-vehicle/ under “Reference & Statistics” then “Registration File Information.”
If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact the Motor Vehicle Division at 334-242-9000.
